Sing Theory

Writing melodies is as easy as 1-2-3 when using the supertonic.

The supertonic is a really powerful scale degree because even though it doesn’t have the same magnetic pull as something like scale degree 7 to 1 (the leading tone), it can either pull back to 1 or go up to 3, making it a really fun note to play with in songs. Many of the most popular songs just hang out on the second scale degree with small variations up to 3 or down to 1.

1. Write down your melody using scale degrees 1, 2, and 3.
2. In your right hand, play your new melody.
3. In your left hand, play chords.
